AIPAC is a genuinely powerful, openly-operating lobby and the U.S.–Israel relationship is close — but an influential lobby is not control of a country. U.S. presidents have repeatedly overruled Israel and beaten AIPAC in its biggest fights (Suez 1956, the 1981 AWACS sale, the 1991 loan guarantees), American support rests mainly on domestic constituencies and public opinion that shifts on its own, and the leap from 'a lobby I dislike' to 'a foreign power secretly runs America' recycles the old 'Jews control the government' conspiracy.

   Start with what's true: AIPAC is one of Washington's most effective lobbies and the U.S.–Israel alliance is close. But 'powerful lobby' is not 'controls the country' — and the scholars best known for arguing the lobby has too much influence say so themselves. John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, whose 2006 essay and 2007 book 'The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy' made exactly that argument, define it as a 'loose coalition,' note it is 'no different from the farm lobby, steel or textile workers' unions, or other ethnic lobbies,' say it includes Christian evangelicals as well as Jews, and stress that its 'activities are not a conspiracy of the sort depicted in tracts like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.' Even the case for excessive influence rejects the case for secret control.

   When a U.S. president decided Israel was in the wrong, he didn't ask any lobby's permission — he overruled Israel itself. After Israel, Britain, and France invaded Egypt in the 1956 Suez Crisis, the United States opposed its own allies and drove the U.N. response; on February 20, 1957 President Eisenhower told the nation on live television that the U.N. 'has no choice but to exert pressure upon Israel to comply with the withdrawal resolutions,' and asked, 'Should a nation which attacks and occupies foreign territory in the face of United Nations disapproval be allowed to impose conditions on its own withdrawal?' Under that pressure, Israel withdrew from the Sinai and the Gaza Strip by March 1957. The supposed puppet-master was marched out of conquered land by Washington.

   AIPAC's two most famous head-on collisions with U.S. presidents both ended the same way — with AIPAC losing. In 1981, over the lobby's all-out campaign, Ronald Reagan pushed through the $8.5 billion sale of AWACS surveillance planes and other arms to Saudi Arabia; he told reporters on October 1, 1981 that 'it is not the business of other nations to make American foreign policy,' and on October 28 the Senate refused to block the sale, 52–48. A decade later, when AIPAC mobilized for $10 billion in U.S. loan guarantees to Israel, President George H.W. Bush faced down what he called 'a thousand lobbyists on the Hill' — 'we've got one lonely little guy down here doing it' — and won a 120-day delay. A lobby that 'controls' Washington does not keep losing its biggest fights to it.

   U.S. support for Israel has rested mainly on domestic constituencies, not a foreign hand on the wheel. Tens of millions of American evangelical Christians back Israel for their own theological reasons: Pew found that 70% of white evangelical Protestants say God gave the land of Israel to the Jewish people — more than double the 32% of U.S. Jews who say so. And the public's sympathies are not fixed by any lobby. Gallup, which has asked the question since 2001, found in 2026 that for the first time Americans no longer sympathized more with Israelis (36%) than with Palestinians (41%). A nation whose heart a foreign power supposedly controlled would not see its own opinion swing.

   Follow the money and the 'they bought the whole government' story gets thin. For roughly six decades AIPAC gave candidates nothing directly — it ran no PAC and, as FactCheck.org puts it, 'historically refused to contribute funds to individual candidates' campaigns.' It created AIPAC PAC only on December 15, 2021 and its super PAC, the United Democracy Project, on January 3, 2022; in the 2022 cycle that super PAC spent about $33 million, concentrated in a small number of congressional primaries. Real money — but a sliver of the roughly $15.9 billion spent on the 2024 U.S. federal elections. That's the budget of an interest group, not the purchase price of a superpower.

   Here's the tell. Criticizing a lobby — or U.S. foreign policy — is ordinary democratic politics; Americans do it about the NRA, Big Oil, and the AARP every day. What turns 'influential lobby' into 'Israel/AIPAC controls America' is the extra claim of a hidden foreign hand secretly running the country against its own people's will — which is the centuries-old 'Jews secretly control the government' conspiracy in a new suit. The ADL lists 'Jews have too much power' over government and the 'dual loyalty' smear (that Jewish citizens are really loyal to Israel) as classic antisemitic myths, and the AJC traces the 'hidden hand' control trope to the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The honest move isn't to pretend lobbies don't lobby — it's to stop mistaking a lobby for a leash.
