Bulls are red-green colourblind — to them that cape is a dull grey. They're charging the movement, not your wardrobe.

Bulls can't even single out red — they're red-green colourblind. What sets one off is the matador's flapping cape, not its colour; the red is for the crowd (and traditionally said to help hide the blood).

Cattle are dichromats: they have blue and yellow-green cones but no long-wavelength 'red' cone, so they're red-green colourblind. To a bull, a red cape reads as a dull yellowish-grey, not a vivid provocation.

What actually triggers a charge is movement, not colour. When MythBusters tested it, bulls went after moving targets regardless of colour and ignored a motionless person dressed in red.

The colour is irrelevant in practice: earlier stages of a bullfight use pink or yellow capes, and the bull charges those just the same.

The red muleta is tradition and showmanship — commonly said to help mask the bull's blood — not because the colour angers the animal.
