The Holocaust is the best-documented genocide in history: Nazi Germany recorded its own crime (the Wannsee Protocol, the Einsatzgruppen tallies, the Korherr report), the perpetrators confirmed it under oath at Nuremberg rather than deny it, and in 2000 a British libel court judicially exposed Holocaust denial as the deliberate falsification of evidence. The roughly six million figure is a convergent estimate drawn from hundreds of thousands of German records cross-checked against demographic data.

   The Nazis documented their own genocide. The Wannsee Protocol of 20 January 1942 — minutes compiled (and heavily edited) by Adolf Eichmann from a conference chaired by Reinhard Heydrich — set out the coordinated, continent-wide murder of European Jewry, a target Heydrich's figures put at roughly 11 million people; one original copy survived in German Foreign Office files and was used in evidence at the Nuremberg proceedings and at Eichmann's 1961 trial. The mobile killing units (Einsatzgruppen) filed detailed running tallies of their mass shootings — for example 33,771 Jews murdered at Babyn Yar over two days in September 1941 — and at least 1.5 million people died in these shootings and gas-van operations. You cannot 'fabricate' a genocide that the perpetrators bureaucratically counted in their own reports.[1][2]

   At Nuremberg the perpetrators confirmed it — they only argued over blame. As the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum puts it, 'None of the perpetrators denied the Holocaust. Most just tried to deflect their responsibility for the killings.' Allied armies had captured millions of German documents, and SS officials — including Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss — testified frankly to the gassing of more than a million Jews. Holocaust denial did not exist among the people who actually ran the camps.[3]

   The 'six million' is not one ledger line — it is a convergence estimate, and that is its strength. The USHMM is explicit: 'There is no single Nazi German document that accounts for every death in the Holocaust. Rather, there are hundreds of thousands of pages of Nazi German documents that recorded this information.' The figure is reconstructed from surviving German records — transport and deportation lists, the Korherr report delivered to Himmler in 1943, the Höfle Telegram of January 1943 — cross-checked against prewar and postwar demographic studies. The records even corroborate one another: Korherr's statistics reproduce Höfle's exact tally of 1,274,166 deportees. Independent methods built on independent records keep landing in the same range.[4][7]

   The favourite 'gotcha' — that the Auschwitz numbers were quietly lowered — actually shows historians correcting the record, not inflating it. An early Soviet figure of 4 million was never verified and rested largely on prisoner testimony; after 1989 the Auschwitz Memorial historian Franciszek Piper established from the archives that about 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz and at least 1.1 million were murdered there — approximately one million of them Jews. Correcting one camp's inflated early count did not lower the roughly six million total, because that total is built from an entirely separate and far broader body of records — deportation lists, German statistical reports and demographic studies — not from the Soviet Auschwitz estimate.[6][5][4]

   Denial was put on trial under cross-examination — and collapsed. In Irving v Penguin Books and Lipstadt (London, judgment 11 April 2000), Mr Justice Charles Gray ruled that the writer David Irving had, 'for his own ideological reasons[,] persistently and deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence,' and that he 'is an active Holocaust denier' who 'is anti-semitic and racist.' A court of law tested the claim that the Holocaust was exaggerated against the documentary evidence — and found the exaggeration was entirely on the denier's side.[8]

   Calling the Holocaust 'exaggerated' is not a numbers debate — it is a recognized form of antisemitism. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, whose Working Definition of Holocaust Denial and Distortion was adopted by consensus in Toronto on 10 October 2013, includes within denial 'calling into doubt the use of principal mechanisms of destruction (such as gas chambers, mass shooting, starvation and torture)' and the 'gross minimization of the number of the victims,' and states that 'Holocaust denial in its various forms is an expression of antisemitism' — because its function is to exonerate Nazism and recast Jews as fraudsters.[9]
