9/11 was planned and carried out by al-Qaeda: the official 9/11 Commission attributed it to 19 al-Qaeda hijackers led by Osama bin Laden, who later confessed on video. The “dancing Israelis” — five movers detained in New Jersey — were real, but the FBI investigated and cleared them of any foreknowledge or involvement, deporting them on visa violations; and the “4,000 Jews were warned” rumor is a garbled echo of an early estimate of Israelis in the area, debunked by the State Department (Jews died in the towers in proportion to their share of the local workforce). “The Mossad did 9/11” is the old antisemitic “Jews secretly control events” conspiracy, recycled onto a confessed al-Qaeda attack.

   Start with the part the theory has to skip: the people who did it are documented, and the man who ordered it confessed — on camera, twice. The 9/11 Commission, the official U.S. inquiry, found the attacks were carried out by 19 al-Qaeda hijackers and states flatly that “the 9/11 attack was driven by Usama Bin Ladin,” from a plot (the “planes operation”) whose “principal architect” was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum says the same — 19 al-Qaeda terrorists, and al-Qaeda “claimed responsibility.” And bin Laden did: in a December 2001 tape recovered in Afghanistan he gloated that “we calculated in advance the number of casualties… based on the position of the tower,” and in an October 29, 2004 video aired on Al Jazeera he accepted responsibility outright, vowing to “destroy towers in America in order that they taste some of what we tasted.” No U.S. investigation attributes 9/11 to Israel or the Mossad. To blame them, you have to mute the confession.

   Now the “dancing Israelis” — and here is the honest part, because the incident is real. On 9/11, five Israeli men who worked for a New Jersey moving company, Urban Moving Systems, were seen reacting to and filming the burning towers from across the Hudson; a witness called it in, and police stopped their van hours later. They were held about two and a half months, interrogated, polygraphed, and questioned about possible intelligence links — and then cleared. The FBI’s own field report, quoted by the Jewish Chronicle, concluded that “none of the Israelis had any information on prior knowledge regarding the bombing of the World Trade Center” and that “none of the Israelis were actively engaged in clandestine intelligence activities in the United States.” They were charged only with immigration offences and deported on visa violations. The lurid details get explained, not buried: the box cutter was a mover’s everyday tool, and the cash and foreign passports were what a crew of foreign workers carries — investigated, not damning; and a widely-shared photo of them “celebrating” is, per Snopes, an AI-generated fake from 2024. “Detained and investigated” is true; “Mossad agents with foreknowledge” is exactly what the FBI ruled out.

   The companion rumour — “4,000 Jews were warned to skip work” — is just as false, and its origin is almost funny. It is a garbled echo of a September 12, 2001 Jerusalem Post report that Israel’s foreign ministry had received “the names of 4,000 Israelis believed to have been in the areas of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon” — an early head-count of people thought to be somewhere in the area, not a warning, not an absentee list, not a death toll. In reality, Jews died in the towers in numbers matching their share of the local workforce: an estimated 270–400 victims, with the U.S. State Department putting it at “10% to 15% of WTC victims.” Israeli citizens were among the dead, too — like Alona Avraham, 30, of Ashdod, a passenger on the plane that hit the south tower. (Those Israelis who were killed, needless to say, are not the five who were detained and deported — entirely different people.)

   Step back and the shape is familiar. The ADL documents that “Israel / the Mossad / the Jews did 9/11” arrived within days as a cluster of antisemitic conspiracy theories — the warned-off Jews, the Mossad-ran-it claim, the libel that the complex’s Jewish leaseholder blew up his own buildings for insurance, and the catch-all that a “Jewish-controlled media and government” buried the truth. The ADL traces it straight to “centuries-old antisemitic tropes about Jews supposedly manipulating world events for their own benefit,” with promoters literally citing the Protocols of the Elders of Zion — the Tsarist-era forgery, branded a “fake” and “clumsy forgery” by The Times of London as early as 1921, that the USHMM calls “the most widely distributed antisemitic publication of modern times.” It is the “they secretly control everything” myth, wearing a 9/11 costume.

   Finally, the move at the heart of it: turning “investigated” into “guilty.” After 9/11 the United States ran an enormous immigration dragnet — the Justice Department’s own inspector general found 762 people detained under a “hold until cleared” policy, almost all on ordinary visa issues — so being briefly detained in that sweep is evidence of a panicked September, not of a plot. Criticise intelligence agencies or foreign policy all you like; that is ordinary politics. But “the Mossad did 9/11” takes a confessed, documented al-Qaeda attack, pins it on people the FBI cleared, and dresses an old conspiracy theory in the rubble of nearly 3,000 dead. The evidence says al-Qaeda. So does the man who did it.
