The canard

“The Holocaust's figure of six million Jewish deaths was taken from a Talmudic prophecy that requires six million Jews to die before the Messiah can come. The number was chosen to check off that prophecy, which is proof the genocide was invented to fulfil scripture.”

A prophecy that needs the Nazis to keep the ledgers, historians to total them after the war, and its own wording invented decades later is not a prophecy. It's a documented genocide, read backwards. Here are the receipts:

The receipts

No Jewish text, Talmudic or otherwise, sets a required number of deaths as a condition for the Messiah; the traditional conditions are a Davidic king, the ingathering of the exiles, a rebuilt Temple and world peace. The Holocaust's roughly six million is not a number picked to fit a prophecy but an after-the-war reconstruction from the Nazis' own deportation and killing records cross-checked against prewar and postwar censuses, with serious scholarship converging between about five and six million. 'Six million' appeared before the war because roughly that many Jews lived in imperilled Eastern Europe, and the only reading that ties that figure to the Holocaust's dead is a modern, post-1945 one, not an ancient blueprint.

    Start with the claim's own premise: that Jewish scripture sets a body count for the Messiah. It doesn't. The classical conditions are spelled out plainly. Maimonides, the 12th-century codifier of Jewish law, describes a king descended from David who "diligently contemplates the Torah," fights "the wars of God," and "builds the Temple in its place, and gathers the dispersed of Israel"; the Jewish Virtual Library lists at least five things, being Davidic descent, sovereignty in the land, the ingathering of the exiles, restored Torah observance, and world peace. (Maimonides even rejected the idea that the Messiah must personally work miracles or revive the dead, "a belief he ascribed to 'fools.'") On the timing, the Talmud's sages debate whether redemption follows a fixed divine date or human repentance, with Rav concluding that "the matter depends only upon repentance and good deeds" (Sanhedrin 97b). A required number of deaths appears in none of it.

    The tradition does foretell hardship before the Messiah — the "birth pangs," a time of upheaval its sources paint with social collapse ("informers will proliferate," "the number of students of Torah diminishes," "the peruta [small coin] will cease from the purse") and, elsewhere, with war and famine (Sanhedrin 97a). But it is upheaval, never a body count: no source names a number of dead, and none frames the suffering as a quota that must be filled before the Messiah may come. And Maimonides codifies the sages' warning against exactly the game the canard plays, pinning redemption to a calculation: "May the spirits of those who attempt to determine the time of Mashiach's coming expire!" There is no six-million rule to fulfil because there is no death-toll rule at all.

    Now the load-bearing move: the claim needs the number to come first, a target the plotters then set out to fill. History runs the other way. "Six million" is not lifted from anything; it is an after-the-fact reconstruction of a body count. The figure was first put on the record by one of the perpetrators — at war's end the captured SS officer Wilhelm Höttl testified that Eichmann had told him, in 1944, that some six million Jews had been killed — and historians then rebuilt it independently. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is explicit that "there is no single Nazi German document that accounts for every death in the Holocaust" — the total is assembled from "surviving Nazi German reports and records; prewar and postwar demographic studies; records created by Jews during and after the war; documentation created by resistance groups and underground activists," and other archives. The Holocaust, the Museum notes, is "the best documented case of genocide." You cannot pre-select a number to fake a genocide whose count is reverse-engineered, years later, out of the killers' own filing cabinets.

    The "they invented it" framing isn't new, either. It is a catalogued denial trope: the ADL records deniers claiming Jews "invented the Holocaust 'story' in order to... gain support for the creation of the state of Israel in 1948," and, as one scholar of the subject puts it, "challenging the symbolic number of six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust is not new and has been used by Holocaust deniers for decades."

    Notice, too, what a real forensic number looks like next to a "mystical" one. A prophecy hands you a single magic figure. The evidence hands you a converging range: Yad Vashem states that "all the serious research confirms that the number of victims was between five and six million," the estimates reached by comparing prewar and postwar censuses against the Nazis' own deportation records. Independent scholars land across that band, from Raul Hilberg near the bottom (about 5.1 million) to Lucy Dawidowicz and others near the top (about 5.9 million). "Six million" is the well-supported round figure for that range, not a claim of precision to the person.

    And where the perpetrators' paperwork survives, it is chillingly exact. A January 1943 SS radio message, the Höfle Telegram, logged 1,274,166 Jews deported to just four killing sites by the end of 1942, a figure the SS statistician Richard Korherr then quoted in his own report two months later. The genuinely independent check is external: those SS tallies reconcile with surviving transport records to within tens of people (the count of French Jews deported by the end of 1942, for instance, matches to within thirty). (That 1.27 million covers only those four sites through 1942, a fraction of the whole, so it corroborates a segment, not the full six million.) Prophecies don't reconcile to the transport manifests.

    So why does "six million" turn up in newspapers before 1939, the deniers' favourite "gotcha"? Because that is roughly how many Jews were actually living, and dying, in Eastern Europe. Russia's 1897 census counted 5,189,400 Jews, "about one-half of world Jewry," most of them penned into the Pale of Settlement; by 1933 some 5.5 million lived in Poland and the Soviet Union alone, of about 9.5 million in Europe. And they were genuinely imperilled: tsarist-era pogroms, mass wartime expulsions, and the pogroms of the 1918–1921 Russian Civil War, which killed tens of thousands of Jews (scholarly estimates range from about 30,000 to 100,000–125,000, and as high as roughly 300,000 by some counts). Relief campaigns pleaded for them in exactly those terms. A 1919 fundraising appeal in The American Hebrew opened:

    From across the sea six million men and women call to us for help, and eight hundred thousand little children cry for bread.

    That an endangered population of about six million was later murdered is a horror of demography, not evidence of a script written in advance. And the "the number showed up early, so it was planned" meme is, on inspection, cherry-picking: fact-checkers note that in the prewar press "the figure of 6 million Jews is just one of many references... to the size of Jewish populations" — and in that same newspaper database, smaller figures like one million and one hundred thousand turn up far more often.

    So where does the "prophecy" even come from? From a real but modern piece of Jewish wordplay, run backwards. There is an ancient scribal quirk in the Torah: the word tashuvu, "you shall return" (Leviticus 25:10), is written a letter short — missing a vav, whose numerical value is six. The 13th-century Zohar reads that missing letter as a hint of Israel's return to its land; the same wordplay is also read joyously, the word's value (708) as the Hebrew year 5708 — 1948. What is genuinely new, unmistakably after 1945, is one further gloss: Rabbi Benjamin Blech's note that "the missing vav (corresponding to the number six) perhaps alludes to the missing Six Million," carried in Jewish outlets as an act of remembrance.

    That is the whole "prophecy": an old wordplay about return, plus a modern rabbi's grief-stricken reading tying the six to the six million murdered. The canard takes that after-the-fact act of mourning, reverses the arrow of time, and rebrands it an "ancient requirement" the dead were killed to satisfy. A reading composed to memorialise a genocide cannot have been the blueprint for it.

    Finally, the wrapper — and both halves collapse on contact. The post's "how" rests on two old libels. The first: a fake Talmud that supposedly lets Jews cheat non-Jews and harm children. In reality the text forbids both — halachic authorities find no "distinction... between Jews and the other nations of the world regarding the prohibition of stealing," treat cheating a non-Jew as the graver sin (a desecration of God's name), and treat the abuse of a child as rape, not a right. The scandalous "quotes" that say otherwise come from a documented forgery genre, in which, the ADL notes, polemicists "frequently mistranslate" passages "or cite them out of context (wholesale fabrication of passages is not unknown)" — a line running through Justinas Pranaitis's 1892 Latin tract (published in English in 1939 as The Talmud Unmasked), whose author was exposed at the 1913 Beilis trial as unable to answer basic questions about the text. (There was a real early rabbinic debate over theft from a non-Jew; normative law settled firmly on prohibition.) The second libel — that Jews secretly run the media, banks and schools — is simply the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Tsarist-era forgery the USHMM calls "the most widely distributed antisemitic publication of modern times," in modern dress. Each is a full canard in its own right, with its own receipts.

    The through-line is the tell: to believe the Holocaust was invented to fulfil a prophecy, you have to invent the prophecy, ignore the perpetrators' own records, and run history backwards. That is a great deal of forgery to accuse other people of.
