The belief that Jews secretly run the world's banks and media descends from the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a Tsarist-era forgery stitched together from an 1864 French satire and an 1868 German novel, exposed as plagiarism by The Times of London in 1921 and ruled a forgery by a Swiss court in 1935. Its companion legends — Rothschild "world control" and the modern "globalist" code word — are equally manufactured, and collide with the basic fact that Jews are roughly 0.2% of humanity and anything but a single coordinated bloc.

   The 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' — the foundational text behind essentially every 'Jews control the world' claim — is a proven forgery, not a leaked plan. In August 1921 The Times of London showed it was copied from earlier books and branded it a 'fake' and a 'clumsy forgery'; in 1935 a Swiss court at the Bern Trial ruled it a forgery, the trial judge calling the text 'ridiculous nonsense.' A 1937 appeal cancelled that conviction — but only because the Protocols 'cannot be considered as immoral literature in the strict sense of the cantonal penal code'; the same appeals court still branded the attacks 'particularly vile' and never ruled the forgery genuine.[1][2][3]

   Its content was copied, not discovered. Large sections were lifted from Maurice Joly's 1864 satire 'Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu' — a French work attacking the regime of Napoleon III that, in the USHMM's words, contains 'no mention of Jews' — and the secret-meeting motif was taken from the fictional Prague-cemetery chapter of Hermann Goedsche's 1868 novel 'Biarritz.' A 'plan for world domination' assembled out of two unrelated works of fiction documents nothing.[1]

   The fabrication first surfaced in 1903, serialized in the St. Petersburg newspaper Znamia, and is traced by historians to circles linked to the Tsarist secret police (the Okhrana) seeking a scapegoat amid revolutionary unrest. Norman Cohn's classic study 'Warrant for Genocide' traces how this manufactured hoax was nonetheless weaponized into a 'warrant' for 20th-century antisemitic violence — the myth's real-world output was persecution, not evidence.[1][9]

   The Rothschild 'they control the money' legend is just as invented. The Rothschild Archive's own study by historian Brian Cathcart states plainly that 'Nathan Rothschild was not at Waterloo,' that there is 'no evidence' he received early news of the 1815 battle by carrier pigeon (a story it calls 'pure fantasy'), and that he made no great fortune from the battle. The whole tale was conjured by an antisemitic 1846 pamphlet signed 'Satan' (the polemicist Georges Dairnvaell), then repeated until it sounded like history.[4]

   'Globalist' is the same trope in modern code. The AJC and ADL document that antisemites use it as a stand-in for 'Jew,' alleging hidden control of 'the world's banks, governments, and media' — language the AJC traces to Nazi rhetoric that cast Jews as 'international elements.' The reality is the inverse of secret omnipotence: Jews number nearly 15 million, about 0.2% of the world's population, and, as the ADL puts it, are 'not monolithic' and 'do not act as one to advance a particular, unified agenda.'[6][5][7][8]
